As part of their mission to provide exceptional education and in response from member and industry requests for more hands-on training, SAMPE launched their first “Tooling Technologies for Composites Workshop”, which featured presentations from leading tooling experts and a full day of hands-on lab activity. The event took place at the University of Southern California's Composites Laboratory on October 17-18, 2017.
Speakers included representatives from the following companies:
- Abaris Training Resources, Inc.
- Advanced Ceramics Manufacturing
- Ascent Aerospace/ Coast Composites Tooling
- Airtech International, Inc.
- BTG Composites, Inc.
- Carbon Innovations LLC (CFoam)
- SpinTech (Smart Tooling)
- Stratasys Inc.
- TenCate Advanced Composites
- University of Southern California
“By including hands-on activities, attendees were able to apply some of the skills and information they learned on day one, solidifying key points of the program,” said Lou Dorworth, Abaris Training Resources. Lab exercises included layup and processing composites parts on various tooling materials, producing "Spring-in/Spring-out" effects with angle shapes, symmetric vs. asymmetric laminates, Airtech, C-Foam and Rubbercraft demonstrations, and more.
“As an instructor, it’s great when students are engaged. This group asked intelligent questions and the level of discourse was incredible,” said Dr. Scott Beckwith, SAMPE Global Technical Director and President of BTG Composites, Inc. “And, as expected, everyone was very excited about the hands-on labs and opportunity to network among the 50 attendees.”
Preliminary feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive. SAMPE has plans to offer more hands-on workshops for Tooling and Additive Manufacturing, as well as considering adding other topics in the future.
